For T Level students, work-readiness is about more than knowing the theory. It’s about confidence, communication, empathy, decision-making and the ability to step into a professional environment and respond appropriately. That was the central theme of Metaverse Learning’s recent webinar, Building Work-Readiness in T Level Students with Immersive Learning, hosted by James Pallister with guest speakers Jessica Fleming and Harris Debenham from USP College.
The session explored how immersive learning is being used with T Level Health students to help bridge the gap between classroom learning and workplace practice. Drawing on a small case study with year-one students at USP College, the discussion examined what work-readiness means in practice, how students responded to immersive scenarios, and what providers should consider when introducing this type of technology.
What work-readiness really means
During the session, Jess explained that when employers talk about students not being work-ready, they are often referring to the softer, transitional skills that help learners become confident members of the workforce.
For Health T Level students, this includes clinical understanding, but also communication, empathy, professionalism, and the confidence to interact with patients, colleagues, and adults in different settings.
Jess described the challenge as helping students move from being “a good student” to becoming “a good worker”. While learners may understand the knowledge in the classroom, they still need opportunities to practise applying that knowledge in realistic situations.
One example discussed was the difference between using medical language in an assignment and knowing how to communicate clearly with a patient. In a workplace, students need to adapt their tone, language and behaviour to the person in front of them.
Why classroom learning needs another layer
The webinar also explored why traditional classroom preparation can only take students so far.
Jess explained that classroom environments are important, but they can often feel predictable and low-pressure. Students know they are practising in a safe space, often with mannequins or structured scenarios, and the consequences of a mistake are limited.
Workplaces are different. They are unpredictable, busy and often pressurised. In healthcare settings, learners may need to manage noise, patient emotions, changing circumstances and their own confidence at the same time.
This is where immersive learning can add another layer. It gives students the chance to step into realistic environments, experience some of that pressure and practise decision-making before they enter placement or employment.
As Jess explained, it creates a bridge between the classroom and the workplace. Learners can still make mistakes safely, but the experience feels closer to the kinds of situations they may face in practice.
How USP College used immersive learning
USP College used a selection of Metaverse Learning’s Health and Social Care scenarios with year one T Level Health students.
The scenarios included:
Healthcare support worker patient observations
Registered practitioner nurse post-op
Domiciliary care
End-of-life care
These scenarios were selected using the Metaverse Learning AI mapping system, which matched the content against the course specification and selected the modules that would best support the curriculum and students’ work-readiness skills.
Students primarily used the virtual reality (VR) modules, but USP College also made the content available on laptops and tablets where needed. Harris explained that this gave students the option to opt out of VR if they had health concerns or preferred to use another device.
The college also used interactive boards in immersive rooms, allowing students to work in teams and complete modules together. This brought an element of competition into the session, which helped increase engagement.
Student response and engagement
The response from students was positive.
USP College collected feedback through observation and Microsoft Forms after each session. Students were asked about how much they enjoyed the modules, whether the content linked to their learning, what skills they felt they had developed and how well the modules supported work experience skills.
Jess shared that most students rated their enjoyment highly, and every student agreed that the modules linked back to what they were learning on their course.
Students also identified a broad range of skills they felt they were developing, including health and safety, decision-making, communication, observation and monitoring.
One of the most valuable outcomes was not originally on the feedback list. Jessica noticed that students were developing stronger reflection skills. At the end of each module, learners looked at their score, considered what they had done well and identified areas they wanted to revisit. Some compared their scores from previous attempts and recognised their own progress.
This reflective behaviour became one of the most powerful parts of the experience.
Building confidence through repetition
Confidence was a recurring theme throughout the webinar.
Jess described how students were tentative in the first session, but by the later sessions, they were more willing to step into the scenarios and talk themselves through what they were doing. Some students spoke aloud to the virtual patients, practising the communication they would need in a real healthcare setting.
This mattered because confidence had a wider impact. When students felt more confident, their communication improved, their listening improved, and they were less distracted by what was happening around them. They could focus more on the patient and the task in front of them.
For T Level students preparing for placement, that confidence can make a meaningful difference.
Supporting access to workplace experience
The webinar also considered how immersive learning could support students who have limited access to workplace placements or industry exposure.
Jess was clear that immersive learning should not replace placement. However, she explained that it can play a valuable role in preparing students before they go into the workplace.
Students can practise scenarios in VR, experience the sounds and pressures of a realistic environment, and build confidence before encountering similar situations in placement. It can also help learners experience situations they may not be able to take part in directly because of their age, placement restrictions or the nature of the setting.
There was also discussion around learners who may face temporary barriers to accessing placement because of health, home life or other personal circumstances. In these cases, immersive learning could provide another way for students to continue developing relevant skills while they work towards returning to placement.
What providers should consider
A key takeaway from the session was that successful implementation depends on people, planning and support.
Harris explained that one of the biggest technical challenges was setting up and managing the headsets. Devices need to be charged, updated and ready to use. Students also need support if they are unsure what to do inside the headset, especially in the early sessions.
Both Jessica and Harris felt that having digital learning support in the room made a significant difference. It allowed Jessica to focus on teaching, while Harris helped troubleshoot and guide students through any technical issues.
The early challenges became easier over time. Harris explained that by the later sessions, students were much more confident using the technology and needed far less support.
Jessica also stressed the importance of having a teacher who is open to trying new approaches, as well as managers who give staff the space and encouragement to experiment. For immersive learning to work well, it needs the right culture.
Being clear with students from the start
One of the strongest practical points from the webinar was the importance of explaining the purpose of immersive learning to students before they begin.
Jess told her students what they were going to do, which skills they were practising and how the modules linked to their course. She made it clear that the sessions were not a stand-alone activity, but part of their wider learning journey.
This helped students understand the value of the experience. They could see how the modules connected to their units, work-readiness and future placement.
James highlighted this as a key takeaway for other providers. When students understand why they are using immersive learning, it becomes part of the curriculum rather than a one-off activity.
Looking ahead
When asked how immersive learning could develop within T Levels over the next three to five years, Jess said she believes it is already on its way to becoming more integrated.
There is still more experimentation to do, and providers will need to keep learning what works best. However, the experience at USP College showed how immersive learning can help students practise realistic scenarios, build confidence and connect classroom learning with workplace expectations.
The value lies in using the technology for the right reasons. When immersive learning is mapped to the curriculum, clearly introduced and properly supported, it can provide learners with meaningful opportunities to prepare for the world of work.
The webinar ended with two clear messages for providers exploring immersive learning.
First, be explicit with students about why they are using it and how it connects to their course.
Second, make sure staff have the support they need to make the experience work in practice.
With those foundations in place, immersive learning can become a powerful part of T Level preparation, helping students move from knowing the theory to feeling ready to apply it.
