Adult learners preparing for job interviews now have access to a realistic practice environment, where parents can rehearse crucial school conversations before attending their children’s parent-teacher evenings. This represents the cutting-edge reality at WM College, where educators are pioneering the integration of immersive technology into English language learning with impressive results.
Whilst many educational institutions have remained cautious about adopting immersive technologies—citing financial constraints, technical uncertainties, and institutional inertia—WM College has demonstrated remarkable forward-thinking leadership. In March 2025, Digital Learning Manager Besim Gerguri and ESOL Advanced Learning Practitioner Sam Pepper, winner of the Mayor of London Adult Learning Award, initiated a comprehensive study examining whether immersive technology could enhance traditional teaching methodologies.
The college’s usage of Ascentis’ ESOL Immersive Learning Platform, developed by Metaverse Learning, has proved particularly astute. Available at no additional cost to most Ascentis ESOL centres, the platform offers eight carefully designed scenarios enabling learners to navigate real-world situations independently. Crucially, the technology can be accessed with standard laptops in addition to VR headsets, ensuring broad accessibility whilst maintaining sophisticated immersive learning benefits.
The study’s nine Level 1 ESOL participants brought no previous experience with either immersive technology or video gaming, providing invaluable insights into how typical adult learners respond to digital innovation in language education.
The research employed a balanced comparative approach, with learners alternating between immersive simulations and traditional paper-based exercises. This methodical framework enabled a comprehensive evaluation of both teaching methods whilst capturing authentic learner perspectives across different learning formats. Participants completed written assessments following each session, with their work analysed for quality and language development, supplemented by detailed survey feedback.
Hearing directly from learners is the most powerful way to understand the ESOL program’s impact. In this video, she shares her personal journey—how the program helped her build confidence, improve communication, and open new opportunities.
Her story reflects the wider experiences we’ve observed across the program. Below we summarise the significant learning outcomes reported by learners and practitioners.
Enhanced Confidence and Communication Skills – The job interview simulations yielded notable improvements in confidence. Learners utilising immersive technology reported increased self-assurance, attributing this enhancement to the realistic contextual environment, which strengthened their vocabulary acquisition, functional language development, and understanding of professional discourse patterns. The Parents’ evening scenarios revealed more varied responses, with some learners appreciating the immersive environment whilst others valued the reassurance provided by reviewable written materials. As one participant observed, “I can check the answer,” highlighting the continued importance of traditional learning supports.
Improved Vocabulary Acquisition – The platform’s integrated visual, audio, and contextual elements proved highly effective for numerous learners in retaining new vocabulary and functional phrases. The immersive simulations provided memorable learning experiences that enhanced language recall. However, traditional methods retained strong support among learners who valued the opportunity to revisit texts and maintain personal notes for vocabulary reinforcement.
Advanced Speaking Skills Development – Participants across both learning approaches demonstrated comfort with the new technology and reported an enhanced understanding of functional language. Those using immersive technology attributed their improved performance to the realistic and interactive nature of the experience, with confidence improvements particularly striking given the learners’ complete lack of prior VR or gaming experience. This adaptability demonstrates the platform’s intuitive design and exceptional accessibility.
Learner Perspectives and Preferences – Feedback revealed distinct learning preferences with valuable insights. Immersive environments advocates described their experience as engaging and intuitive, offering observations such as “Learning with computers is easier” and “It’s helpful because I can engage in listening and reading simultaneously.” Those favouring traditional approaches emphasised familiarity and flexibility, noting “Better to work on paper than online” and “Helpful because I can read the paper again and again.”
Most participants expressed comfort with immersive technology, with many showing enthusiasm for future VR headset experiences. However, learners recommended gradual technology introduction and blended delivery approaches to optimise accessibility and build confidence progressively.
“Learners found the software engaging and the situations realistic. Their feedback was very positive; they found it motivating and said they wanted more of it in their curriculum.” – Sam Pepper, ESOL Advanced Learning Practitioner, WM College.
Notably, every participant indicated that they would recommend immersive learning to others, particularly valuing the scenarios for their realism and the support they provide in developing listening and speaking skills. Most tellingly, all ten survey respondents expressed preference for blended learning approaches, recognising the complementary benefits of combining technological innovation with traditional methodologies in future ESOL provision.
These findings align with broader international research in educational technology and second language acquisition. Recent studies from Purdue University, West Lafayette, and the University of Auckland have highlighted the effectiveness of VR in enhancing the speaking abilities of English as a Foreign Language learners through authentic learning environments. Systematic reviews consistently demonstrate that blended approaches typically deliver optimal outcomes by accommodating diverse learner preferences and learning styles.
“Language learning is experiential, so the more experiences that one has on their journey of learning a language, the more reference points they have. And it can be very anxiety-provoking to go into a real-life situation and feel the pressure of being in a public place and having to perform and complete tasks… So these kinds of activities available on VR mean that these can be simulated in a really safe way, and that experience can be accumulated and referred back to, really helping people to feel comfortable in everyday life.” – Sam Pepper, ESOL Advanced Learning Practitioner, WM College

WM College’s pioneering research highlights the significant benefits of integrating immersive technology with established teaching methodologies to improve language learning outcomes. The Metaverse Learning/Ascentis ESOL Immersive Learning Platform provides exceptional opportunities for exposing learners to authentic, real-world contexts within controlled, engaging educational environments.
The study’s findings emphasise the critical importance of blended learning in adult ESOL provision, where traditional paper-based methods continue to provide essential structural support and accessibility, while immersive technology offers dynamic, interactive enhancements that significantly build learner confidence, particularly in speaking and listening competencies.
“I’m absolutely sure that the learners who came today and tried out this technology for the first time all left with a positive impression… They felt that they really got something out of it. So I’m not just saying it because this is what the new technology suggests; I can actually see in the results that the benefits are quite clear.” – Sam Pepper, ESOL Advanced Learning Practitioner, WM College
These results (achieved with learners entirely new to immersive and gaming technologies) provide compelling evidence of the platform’s sophisticated yet intuitive design and its considerable potential for broader application across diverse educational contexts.
Hear directly from WM College on how creating a safe, supportive, and stress-free environment empowers learners to build confidence and retain knowledge:
As WM College continues to integrate innovative educational tools, this research makes a meaningful contribution to the development of inclusive, adaptive, and future-focused ESOL teaching practices. The study demonstrates that effective educational innovation need not abandon proven traditional methods but rather enhance them with technologies that create more engaging, realistic, and confidence-building learning experiences.
This pioneering work positions WM College at the forefront of educational innovation, providing a valuable blueprint for institutions seeking to enhance their language learning provision through thoughtful integration of technology. The unanimous learner preference for blended approaches reinforces the wisdom of combining the best elements of traditional and cutting-edge teaching methodologies to achieve superior educational outcomes.
