East Surrey College, part of the Orbital South Colleges group, wanted to find new ways to prepare learners for real-world experiences, particularly in areas where traditional classroom methods couldn’t fully replicate the environments or emotional challenges of a workplace.
While some vocational courses, such as Motor Vehicle maintenance, can provide tangible, hands-on training in workshops, others, like Health and Social care, often rely on role play or imagined scenarios. This approach left learners struggling to build the confidence and relational skills they needed to thrive in professional settings.
The college also wanted to explore how immersive technology could play a role in supporting broader inclusion and employability objectives, from upskilling adults returning to work, to preparing individuals in prison for life beyond the gate.
Through funding from the Local Skills Improvement Fund, East Surrey College partnered with Metaverse Learning to introduce a suite of immersive learning programmes, beginning with Health and Social care.
These realistic, interactive scenarios allowed learners to step into virtual environments that mirrored the world of work. From navigating a client’s home to rehearsing communication and decision-making, learners could safely experience, reflect, and repeat key tasks until they felt fully prepared for real-life situations.
Staff engagement was critical to success. The college embedded immersive learning into training and development, timetabled cross-campus sessions between East Surrey College and John Ruskin College, and celebrated innovative use across departments. Teachers who became early adopters acted as in-house champions, sharing insights and helping colleagues see the power of the technology through their own students’ progress.
The partnership also extended beyond the college walls. Together with BT and HMP High Down, East Surrey College, and Metaverse Learning delivered the Greys to Green project, a pioneering initiative supported by the Mayor of London’s office.. The project used immersive learning to teach green technologies to prisoners preparing for release, combining digital skills development with vocational education to improve post-release employment prospects.
Immersive learning has had a transformative effect on learners and staff across the Orbital South Colleges group.
Students can feel more confident and engaged when they have hands-on experience in a safe, simulated space. Health and Social care learners can now rehearse interactions with clients, while Hair and Beauty students use virtual scenarios to practise conversations and techniques, helping some achieve assessment success on their first attempt.
Staff have seen the technology drive deeper learning and collaboration across campuses. It has become a standard part of training, supporting the college’s strategic goal of preparing learners for future workplaces.
The immersive approach is also being used to support adult skills and life-skills programmes, helping learners build independence and confidence in everyday activities such as travelling, paying for services, or navigating public spaces.
In prison education, the Greys to Green project has shown how immersive environments can reconnect learners with industries evolving beyond their reach, opening new opportunities for sustainable employment and successful reintegration into society.
“It’s about giving learners the opportunity to test parts of life they may not yet be familiar with. Immersive learning allows them to see, feel and understand experiences that are difficult to replicate — and that makes all the difference.”
— Dr Lindsay Pamphilon, CEO and Principal, Orbital South Colleges
